Domestic Retrofit Project, Co Cavan

The main part of this house was 240 years old with two-foot-thick stone walls which was terribly cold and damp.  There had being an extension built a number of years ago, but the house was still inefficient and expensive to run.

The homeowners wanted a warm and cosy, energy efficient house to make savings as they moved on in years.

M&C Hybrid Energy assessed the house and found there were a number of issues to be addressed.

Micheal Smith of M&C Hybrid Energy Ltd carried out an assessment on this old dwelling house to establish how they could

  • Save on their energy bills
  • Save on the running costs of this dwelling
  • Reduce their carbon footprint
  • Increase the rating of the house

After an in-depth assessment Micheal proposed the following be put in place:

  • Old single glazed windows be replaced with double glazed windows 24 mil argorn gas filled.
  • Insulation values in the attic to be tripled going from 80mm to 300mm of insulation.
  • A full power flush of the whole heating system.
  • Thermostatic Radiator Valves was fitted on 80% of the radiators.
  • A new Mitsubishi Ecodan Heat Pump and Cylinder to be installed.
  • 2KW of Solar PV to be installed to help supplement the heat pump and day to day running of the house.
  • The old oil Stanley cooker was decommissioned from the heating as the lady in the house did not want to see her cooker go.

The running cost of this house has been reduced to 1200.00 per annum.

The payback on this project is 15 months.

  • 2 KW of PV is offsetting about 1400 kwh’s per year.

The homeowner now feels the house is more comfortable, easier to heat and their bills have reduced enormously. There are no more draughts around the windows and every room in the house has the same comfortable temperature. They are delighted to know that they have also added to the future value of their home.
